Abass Mamud Sesay

2019 Fellow from Sierra Leone

Abass Sesay is a community development activist who combines basic skills in education, health, climate change, and youth empowerment to address challenges in his community. Currently, he is founder and chief executive officer of the Active Ambassadors Network Sierra Leone, a nonprofit organization that promotes education, especially for girls; climate change action; sexual harassment prevention; youth empowerment and leadership training; and gender mainstreaming in communities in Sierra Leone. He has six years of civic society leadership gleaned from organizations such as the RIFTS (Reach in for the Stars) Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and Plan International. A 2019 Mandela Washington Fellow, Abass envisions himself as a practicing barrister focusing on governance, corruption, and criminal cases in his country and helping to transform the legal system so that it is just and equitable.
