Gifty Adzigbey

2023 Fellow from Ghana

Gifty Adzigbey is a public health nurse and a Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreter at Gomoa West District. Gifty holds a diploma in public health nursing. Working as a public health nurse, Gifty is aware that there may be many people with hearing impairment in a scattered settlement. They have a common challenge: a language barrier. This challenge makes it difficult for healthcare providers to render health services because they are unable to communicate. Rural residents are more likely to suffer from diseases of public health importance such as tuberculosis, malaria, polio, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19, and Gifty volunteers as a nurse interpreter to help improve their health and lives. She was particularly inspired to work in the health sector to see that her sister (who has a speech and hearing impairment) and others receive quality, affordable, and accessible health care, education, vocational training, and safety. Gifty believes that healthy people build a healthy community. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, she plans to help train, educate, empower, and support people with disabilities, adolescents, and women to become successful entrepreneurs through vocational training.
