Abubakarr Kamara

2019 Fellow from Sierra Leone

Abubakarr Kamara has more than 12 years’ experience as an activist for differently abled people. Currently, Abubakarr is national coordinator for Hope for the Blind Sierra Leone. He is also a volunteer counselor and teacher of braille and computer skills at Paul School for the Blind. He hosts a weekly radio show on issues relevant to people with disabilities. In partnership with the Center for Coordination of Youth Activities, he has helped provide training in civic education to more than 500 young people, women, and differently abled people in Bo District. Abubakarr holds a Higher Teacher’s Certificate and is finishing his Bachelor of Education in Political Science from Njala University. He is a 2019 Mandela Washington Fellow. Having overcome the challenges facing people who are blind, Abubakarr wants to serve as a living example that disability is not inability and to provide a source of hope for differently abled people in Sierra Leone. He credits the Fellowship with broadening his knowledge about advocacy, introducing him to leaders in his field, teaching him that it is better to be a servant than a boss and to lead by example, and adding fresh hope to his existence as a human being.
