Biabu Shaffi

2021 Fellow from Kenya

Biabu Shaffi is a social entrepreneur and self-taught baker with more than five years' experience in logistics and three years' experience in entrepreneurship. She is the founder of SweetVille Bakery in Mombasa, Kenya, which offers custom cakes and pastries and equips marginalized women with baking and entrepreneurial skills to help them support themselves and their families. She is also a co-founder of the Youth Empowerment Program Initiative (YEPI), a youth-led organization committed to addressing unemployment, poverty, and violent extremism in Kenya through entrepreneurship, leadership, and environmental conservation. She has mentored and inspired more than 2,000 youth and women to start and build businesses across Kenya. Pursuing her passion for women's empowerment, Biabu initiated the Women Empowerment Program Initiative within YEPI to mentor and empower women economically. She is an Alumna of the Young African Leaders Initiative's Regional Leadership Center, an African ChangeMakers Fellow, and a volunteer mentor at Mowgli Mentoring. On completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, she hopes to set up a "business shower" club, in which women can sell, buy, learn, and collaborate.
