Binta Badjie

2019 Fellow from The Gambia

Binta Badjie has more than 11 years of experience in deaf education, social entrepreneurship, and disability rights activism.  She is currently the national coordinator at the Gambian Deaf Women's Society and a senior liaison at Tulkuya Signs Restaurant, where she focuses on empowering deaf women through ongoing partnerships and addressing contemporary issues such as unemployment, access to communication in health care, and gender-based violence.  Over the years, she has successfully advocated for information access and trained over fifty health care workers in sign language, paving the way for confidential communication between health care workers and patients.  Binta holds a bachelor's degree in human resources and labour management.  Binta is a staunch advocate of universal access to information and the inclusion of people with disabilities in global decision-making to promote social equity.  She has received two awards in her country for her work as a social entrepreneur who employs deaf women and as an activist campaigning against gender-based violence.  Binta credits the Mandela Washington Fellowship for providing the opportunity to enhance her leadership skills and contributing to her professional development and community involvement.
