Claudia Duarte Silva Gomes

2021 Fellow from Cabo Verde

Claudia Duarte Silva Gomes is a medical doctor with more than seven years of experience serving in leadership roles at primary and secondary care health institutions. Currently, Claudia is the director and chair of the Regional Hospital Ramiro Figueira in Sal Island, Cabo Verde, in which role she implements the national health policy, manages hospital resources, and ensures good relations with other public and private organizations. While working as health delegate in Santa Cruz, Santiago Island, Claudia led "Pregnancy? Not yet!," a municipal project that raised awareness of the elevated number of low-income girls, ages 10 to 19, who get pregnant while in school. Claudia's team worked with local organizations and community development associations to reach girls in need. Claudia holds a bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Shanghai Jiao Tong. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Claudia plans to promote sustainable health policies, raise awareness of important public health issues (especially adolescent and maternal health issues), and advocate for solutions aimed at improving accessibility to healthcare. She will also lead the Regional Hospital Ramiro Figueira to achieve an even higher level of excellence.
