Darlene Kaly Barreto

2023 Fellow from Cabo Verde

Darlene Barreto is a cultural activist with more than eight years of experience in digital marketing and communication. Currently, Darlene is founder and president of Fundação Orlando Pantera, a nongovernmental organization that preserves and promotes the life and work of Orlando Pantera, her father and an icon in Cape Verde music and culture. At Fundação Orlando Pantera, Darlene works to share her father's legacy with people and to use her knowledge as a musician and social educator to develop projects that use art and music as tools for social education. Previously, Darlene participated in the Madame X International Tour with Madonna in 2019, where she led a group of 14 women. Darlene holds a degree in Marketing Management and a post-graduate degree in Digital Marketing. She is passionate about culture and social activism and is committed to contributing to the sociocultural development of Sierra Leone. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Darlene plans to continue working at Fundação Orlando Pantera, seeking partnerships for projects to promote Cape Verdean culture and art as instruments of education and social inclusion.
