Frederick Nketiah Mensah is a nutritionist and public health expert at Presbyterian Health Service - North in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Fred has 10 years of experience championing social interventions through innovation and evidence-based practice. As projects officer of Presbyterian Health Service ' North, he has implemented a women's empowerment project with a focus on eliminating sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) among women and adolescent girls. He has undertaken community education campaigns and supported the training of more than 100 community leaders to increase knowledge of SGBV and encourage the reporting of abuse. He led an economic and livelihood training workshop for more than 1,500 women and facilitated the formation of five credit cooperatives linking them to financial institutions. To reduce stigma, he led the team to enroll 20 girls who had survived SGBVs in apprenticeship programs of their choice or a back-to-school program. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Fred plans to champion the development of his community through advocacy on issues of public health, nutrition, and women's empowerment. He will advocate for the improvement of women's welfare and the promotion of gender equality policies.
