Ismael Essome Ebone

2019 Fellow from Cameroon

Ismael Essome grew up in the coastal region of Cameroon where fishing has become a less profitable trade due to an increase in pollution. As a result, young people have been forced to move to cities and seek alternative work. Ismael, a trained engineer, was inspired to launch Madiba & Nature, a non-profit organization that creates an eco-friendly boat utilizing recycled plastic bottles. Madiba & Nature hopes to combat pollution, promote a circular economy, and support ecotourism in the region. Through his organization, Ismael coaches young students and engineers on principles of entrepreneurship in the green economy. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Ismael will continue to work with partners and with a passionate team of innovators to develop and launch other businesses that seek to improve the environment and create jobs.
