Kamugisha Blond

2021 Fellow from Burundi

Kamugisha Blond was born deaf and experienced significant challenges due to language barriers throughout most of his early life. After living in India for four years to pursue his education, he is now able to communicate and share his experiences with others, an opportunity that he has enthusiastically seized. Kamugisha has taught sign language to more than 50 individuals, including parents of deaf children, health personnel, educational supervisors, and students. His most significant achievement has been the training of health staff, religious organizations, and educational supervisors and students, which has encouraged understanding of and access for deaf individuals within these institutions. Upon completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Kamugisha plans to use his new skills and network to expand his educational efforts across Burundi and beyond.
