Muazu Alhaji Modu

2018 Fellow from Nigeria

Muazu Modu has over eight years' experience in civic engagement, specializing in social accountability and governance.  He is currently CEO of Spotlight for Transparency and Accountability Initiative, a non-governmental organization whose mission is to use technology to empower communities and collaborate with them to demand accountability, improve service delivery, and promote democratic governance through the Citizen-Led Tracking initiative. Muazu currently holds a master's degree in information technology, a postgraduate diploma, and a higher national diploma in computer science. His experience growing up in a marginalized rural community with limited opportunities to realize his potential has inspired Muaza to empower young people in similar communities to have equal opportunity. After returning from the Mandela Washington Fellowship in 2019, Muazu launched Citizen-Led Tracking.  In under two years, he leveraged the Fellowship's network and resources to directly impact over 900,000 lives in 91 marginalized communities in Nigeria. In recent years, Citizen-Led Tracking emerged as a finalist for several awards including the Young Global Changers Recoupling Award by the Global Solution Initiative in Berlin, Germany (2022); the African Civic Action Prize by AfricTivites in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (2021); Maiden BudgIT's Active Citizen Award in the civic activism category; and the African Union's Top 20 Best Innovations in Democracy and Governance.
