2023 Fellow from Sierra Leone

Rugiatu Kanu has more than seven years of experience in agriculture. Currently, she is quality control coordinator at the Produce Monitoring Board, where she focuses on ensuring that farmers receive the support they need to produce high-quality crops. Rugiatu is also founder and chief executive officer of Slay Farms SL Ltd, where she focuses on agribusiness/farming consultancy and advocating for youth involvement in agriculture. In addition, she is a cocoa and cashew analyst and a cocoa sensory evaluator. Previously, Rugiatu was a farmer connector at the West African Rice Company and worked with She Trade West Africa to address constraints faced by women in the cashew sector. Rugiatu holds a bachelor's degree in Agriculture General and is pursuing a master's degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology. Rugiatu is committed to changing the narrative about agriculture and agribusiness and contributing to food security in Sierra Leone. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young Africa Leaders, Rugiatu plans to hold the first-ever national summit on youth involvement in agriculture to provide a platform to engage youth in an agribusiness venture. Rugiatu also plans to expand her farming business and establish agribusiness hub training centers in all districts.
