Suraphel Mathewos Alemu

2019 Fellow from Ethiopia

Suraphel Alemu has more than four years of experience in health care. Currently, Suraphel is founder and chief executive officer at Doctors in Action, where he focuses on delivering context-based, community-driven solutions in primary health. He also volunteers at schools that train future doctors. Suraphel holds a medical degree from Black Lion Hospital and Education Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He believes in democratizing health care through individual empowerment and community service. Suraphel credits the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, which he received in 2019 with giving him the skills, courage, and network to start a social enterprise in health.
