How You Can Help Protect the Environment, One Tree at a Time

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now” is 2021 Fellowship Alumnus Siyabulela Sokomani‘s favorite Chinese proverb. With deforestation as one of the leading causes of climate change, Siyabuela is passionate about working to mitigate its effects.

Siyabuela is the founder of a plant production nursery called Nguni Nursery . The nursery focuses on working against deforestation practices and cleaning the air with trees, which absorb harmful toxins such as carbon dioxide. In the past two years, Nguni Nursery has grown more than 300,000 trees and plants.

In this YALI Network blog post, Siyabuela suggests actions for beginner climate activists to reduce deforestation and climate change.
